« When mining and agribusiness cause hunger: can the UN protect
rural communities against globalised companies? »
On the occasion of World Food Day, we invite you to a round table discussion on the threats that mining and highly industrialized agriculture pose to the food security of local populations. A binding treaty on transnational corporations is currently being negotiated at the UN on the initiative of South Africa and Ecuador.
Why is such a treaty necessary for states and what is the current status of the negotiations? How does the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants open avenues for action to strengthen the existing framework?
Speakers:
- Maxine Bezuidenhout, Alternative Information & Development Centre, Cape Town
- A representative from the Rural Women’s Assembly (speaker to be confirmed)
- Terence Tshisevhe, South African Permanent Mission to the United Nations Office, Geneva
- A representative of the UN Working Group on UNDROP
- Ulises Quero, International Service for Human Rights, Geneva
Moderation:
- François Mercier, Action de Carême
Participation is free of charge. We look forward to receiving your registration by Tuesday, 14 October 2024 via this form.
